Women's Basketball: Mount Union Defeats Capital in Home Game Saturday

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team beat Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Capital 61-42 Saturday afternoon in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

Mount Union's (9-6, 4-4 OAC) Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) led the Purple Raiders with 11 points and three rebounds. 

Erin Risner led Capital (6-9, 2-6 OAC) with 10 points and three rebounds. 

Sophomore Anna Alkire (Massillon/Jackson) and junior Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) each recorded career-high points, with nine apiece.

The Purple Raiders dominated the Crusaders in the first quarter, outscoring Capital 20-8. In a span of less than three minutes, Mount Union's Liz Jones (Medina/Medina) recorded a free throw, while MorrissetteAlkire and Tinkey all sunk three-pointers. 

Capital went on a 10-7 run in the second quarter, but it wasn't enough leverage to overtake the lead. Tinkey sunk her second three-pointer of the game, while Morrissette and senior Haley Roddy (Medina/Highland) each recorded a layup. 

In the first two quarters of play, Mount Union recorded 20 bench points and out-rebounded Capital 36-19. 

Mount Union came out hot in the third quarter, outscoring Capital 17-6 to lead by 20 points, 44-24, going into the final quarter of play. 

Tinkey sunk her third three-pointer in the fourth quarter while the Raiders went 12-19 on free throws, securing a 61-42 win for the Raiders. 

Mount Union travels to New Concord, Ohio on Wednesday, Jan. 18 for an OAC match-up against Muskingum at 7:30 p.m.
