NEW CONCORD, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team faced an 88-83 loss to Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Muskingum on the road Wednesday night.
Junior Erin White (West Chester/Lakota East) led Mount Union (9-7, 4-5 OAC) with 18 points and eight rebounds, while senior Abbey Bartoszewicz (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian Academy) followed with 17 points and five rebounds.
Muskingum (9-7, 5-4 OAC) was led by Mallory Taylor with 15 points and nine rebounds.
White recorded the first four points of the game to cut Muskingum's early first quarter lead to four points, 7-3, with just over six minutes remaining. The Fighting Muskies led Mount Union by ten points with 1:09 left on the clock when sophomore Meghan Hess (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) sunk a three-point jump-shot, followed by two free throws, to cut the Raiders deficit to five points, 20-15, before going into the second quarter.
Muskingum led the Raiders by as many as 15 points in the second quarter, but a layup and two free throws by Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) and two additional layups by White had Mount Union trailing by 11, 47-36, at the break.
The Raiders came within seven points of Muskingum, the smallest score differential of the third quarter, after Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) made a layup and free throw, but it wasn't enough to spark the scoring run the Raiders needed to overtake Muskingum's lead.
Bartoszewicz scored eight of her 17 points from a three-pointer, three free throws and a jump-shot in the final quarter, while Hess added two three-pointers. The Raiders' 26-19 run brought the team within five points of Muskingum, but the Fighting Muskies pulled off an 88-83 win over Mount Union.
