TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Mount Union women's basketball team clinched a one-point win over Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Heidelberg Saturday afternoon at Heidelberg University, 84-83.
The Purple Raiders (12-11, 7-9 OAC) were led by sophomore Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Abbey Bartoszewicz (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian Academy) followed with 15 points and added two rebounds. Sophomore Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) and junior Erin White (West Chester/Lakota East) each recorded double-digit points, with 14 and 10, respectively.
Heidelberg's (8-15, 5-11 OAC) Theresa Jackson led the Student Princes with 22 points and four rebounds.
Bartoszewicz opened the game by sinking a three-pointer, followed by a jump-shot within the first two minutes of play. Sanborn recorded back-to-back layups before Bartoszewicz made another three-pointer, which was again followed by a Sanborn layup and free throw to lead Heidelberg by four points, 15-11, at the 4:37 mark. Heidelberg tied the game at 17 points with less than four minutes to play; the Student Princes led the Raiders by as many as four points, but a layup by White and a three-pointer by Tinkey tied the game at 22 points at the end of the quarter.
Heidelberg tied the game twice in the first two minutes of the second quarter before Mount Union went on a 10-2 run to lead 37-29 with 4:36 to go. The Raiders' lead was cut to one after Heidelberg scored seven unanswered points to trail 37-36 with just over three minutes to play. Junior Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) made two free throws and White made a layup to put the Raiders ahead of Heidelberg 41-39 at the break.
The Student Princes tied the game on three separate occassions in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but the Raiders ran away with a seven point lead after Tinkey and freshman Meghan Hess (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) made three-pointers and sophomore Liz Jones (Medina/Medina) made a free throw to lead Heidelberg 55-48 at the 4:39 mark. The Student Princes came within two points of the Raiders with a minute and a half left to play, but Mount Union kept the lead going into the final period, 63-56.
Mount Union led by as many as 10 points and as few as one in the final quarter. Tinkey made back-to-back three-pointers to give Mount Union its largest lead over Heidelberg, 78-68, with 3:51 remaining in regulation. Heidelberg's Theresa Jackson made a buzzer-beating three-pointer to bring the Student Princes within one point of the Raiders, 84-83, but Mount Union clinched the win.
The Raiders host OAC opponent Baldwin Wallace Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
