ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated Oberlin College 65-44 in its season opener Wednesday night at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
Junior Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists while junior Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) had a team-best seven rebounds to lead the Purple Raiders.
Oberlin (0-1) was led by Ally Driscoll, who tallied 14 points for the Yeowomen.
With a strong defensive start, the Raiders were able to hold the Yeowomen to just 2-of-11 from the floor to start the game while Mount Union was able to get nine of their 18 first quarter points off of seven turnovers to take an 18-10 lead.
Oberlin fired off two quick three-pointers to start the second quarter to close to 18-16 before a 12-0 run by the Raiders put them ahead 30-16 with 3:49 remaining in the half. Mount Union held Oberlin to just nine points for the quarter going into halftime with a 15-point lead of 34-19.
Mount Union continued to keep Oberlin at bay as the Yeowomen scored only nine points in the third quarter as the Raiders extended the lead to 49-28. The Raiders would continue the trend in the fourth quarter cruising to the 21-point win, 65-44.
Mount Union next travels to Washington, Pa. to play Dickinson (Pa.) on Friday, Nov. 17 at 6:00 p.m. in the SpringHill Suites Tournament at Washington and Jefferson College.
