ALLEGHENY, Pa. – The Mount Union women's basketball team fell to Allegheny (Pa.) (2-1) on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup at the David V. Wise Center with a final score of 76-70.
The Purple Raiders (2-2) were led by senior guard Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) who had a career-high night as she tabbed 18 points as she went 9-17 from the field while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists. Juniors Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) and Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) followed behind Morrissette as they also scored double digits of 13 and 15, respectively.
The Raiders and Gators would chip back and forth through all 10 minutes of play in the first quarter. Neither team would let the other get ahead by more than two possessions, despite both team leading briefly by five points. Jaime Sanborn and Casey Morrissette would combine for nine of Mount Union's 15 first quarter points. Mount Union and Allegheny would continue to get bucket for bucket in the second. A deep three-pointer by Tinkey followed a coast-to-coast layup by Morrissette would get the Raiders on their feet and kick start an 8-3 Raider run to close out the half with the lead at 37-32.
Allegheny would come out to take over the third quarter. Combining for 14 points, Morrissette, Sanborn and Tinkey would continue to push the Raiders to keep things close. Tied at 58 going into the fourth, both Raiders and Gators would make it a fight, once again, going bucket for bucket. Inside play would be crucial for the Raiders, as 46 of their 70 points came from inside the paint. A reverse layup by Morrissette with less than two minutes remaining would put the Gators on top by one. Free throws would finish off the fourth quarter as Allegheny would win 75-70.
Mount Union will next travel to Granville, Ohio to take on the Dension Big Red on Wednesday, November 29th at 6:00 pm.
