BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated the Alma Scots (1-10) in a 24-point victory on the second day of competition at the 5th Annual McDonald's Holiday Tournament at Bluffton University with a final score of 78-54.
The Purple Raiders (5-6, 2-2 OAC) were led by junior guard Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) who scored a career-high of 18 points. She was accompanied by senior guard Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) would tallied 15 points and four rebounds. Junior guard Anna Alkire (Massillon/Jackson) dished out seven assists, tying for her career and season-high.
Right out of the gate, a pair of three pointers from Morrissette sparked a 10-2 start for the Raiders. Sophomore guard Tori Rappach (Warren/Howland) followed suit by scoring three of her own to aid in the dominant first quarter as Mount Union would lead Alma 29-7.
To start the second quarter, the Scots began to find their shots inside and from long range but it could not stop the Raiders and their very own success from behind the arc as they would shoot 66.7% for the half. Scoring the most points in a half this season, Mount Union would build a 25-point lead over Alma at 47-22.
During the third, the Scots would begin to chip away at the hefty lead. Alma would still trail by 14 to depsite outscoring Mount Union 22-11 in the quarter, six of those points would come from Jaime Sanborn's (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) fast break plays.
Nearly two miuntes into the fourth quarter, Alma cut the deficit to just 10 points, forcing a Mount Union timeout. Six quick points from Morrissette and Tinkey would reboot the offense and the Raiders would go on to carry out the win, led by nine fourth quarter-points from Tinkey.
Mount Union will next play on Wednesday, January 3rd as they begin the New Year in an OAC matchup hosting the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets at 7:30 pm.
