ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's women's basketball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup to the Baldwin Wallace 73-65 Wednesday night at the McPhearson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders (5-7, 2-3 OAC) were led by junior forward Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) as she recorded 13 points, four rebounds and two blocks while sophomore guard Tori Rappach (Warren/Howland) was also in double figures with 12 points.
Kara Marshall came off the bench with 12 points to lead Baldwin Wallace (7-5, 3-2 OAC).
A drive to the basket by sophomore guard Zanny Sauter (Avon/Avon) and a three-pointer by Rappach would give the Raiders a 9-8 lead with 4:23 to go in the first quarter but BW quickly answered with an 8-0 run until another three by Rappach would slow things down. BW would go into the second quarter with a 19-13 lead.
Mount Union would rally in the second quarter as another Rappach three-pointer would again give the Raiders the lead this time at 27-26 but again the Jackets would respond and close out the frame scoring six of the final seven points to lead 32-28 at the break.
The Raiders tried to mount another rally as junior guard Rachel Tinkey's (Canfield/Canfield) basket cut the BW lead to 34-33 early in the third quarter but the Jackets held firm and went back up 55-47 after three quarters.
Mount Union kept crawling back in the fourth quarter and a Sanborn layup with just under a minute to play got the BW lead down to 64-61 but next time down the floor Kasey Hughes made a bucket was fouled and converted the free-throw to put the Jackets up for good 67-61.
Mount Union stays home to host Otterbein in an OAC game Saturday, January 6 at 3:00 p.m. at the MAAC.
