ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated Otterbein 80-65 Saturday afternoon at the McPhearson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders (6-7, 3-3 OAC) were led by junior guard Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) who recorded a career-high of 22 points. Senior guard Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) followed close behind with 18 points and three steals. Freshman guard Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills/Padua Franciscan) also scored in double figures with 11.
Dani Kissel led the offense for the Cardinals (6-7, 2-4 OAC) with 18 points.
Depsite a 7-2 start for Otterbein, Morrissette tabbed 11 first quarter points while shooting 100% from both the field and the free throw line to set the tempo for Mount Union's offense. Four more Raiders chipped in to lead the Cardinals at the end of the first quarter 27-24.
Otterbein continued to have success shooting and would stay within a three point differential of Mount Union. An 11-2 run midway through the second quarter by Mount Union would bump their lead up to 10. The Cardinals would close out the final two minutes of the half with a few quick possessions, but would still trail 42-37 going into halftime.
Tinkey got the second half up and running with two baskets followed by a pair of steals in just two minutes of play, causing Otterbein their tenth turnover of the game. Morrissette and Tinkey remained in sync finding one another on backdoor cuts to the basket which allowed a 10-3 start for Mount Union. The pace was then set for the rest of the quarter as they would lead Otterbein 64-50.
Mount Union continued to have a strong defensive presence causing Otterbein to committ more turnovers. The Cardinals went into a tight, full-court press in efforts to get some points off turnovers as well, but it was not enough. Raiders went on to win the game 80-65.
Mount Union will next travel down to Marietta, Ohio and face the Pioneers on Wednesday, January 10 at 7:30 p.m.
