WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated Wilmington 72-69 Saturday afternoon at Fred Raizk Arena. With five Purple Raiders scoring in double figures, Mount Union improves to 10-9 overall and 7-5 in the OAC.
Junior forward Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) led the way for Mount Union with 13 points as she has been the leading scorer in four of the last five games. Also scoring in double digits was Tori Rappach (Warren/Howland) who came off the bench with 11 points, while Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills/Padua Franciscan), Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) and Caitlin Tytler (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) all scored 10.
Mackenzie Campbell led the offense for Wilmington (9-10, 4-8 OAC) with 19 points.
Tinkey would get Mount Union on the board with a pair of free throws to start the first quarter. Wilmington then responded by going on a 7-0 run until they were stopped by a jumper from Rauhe making it 7-4 with 5:15 left in the quarter. Rauhe would tie the game 9-9 but Wilmington would get the last shot to make it 11-9.
Back-to-back three's from Corie Inverso (Danville/Danville) and Sanborn allowed the Raiders to take the lead at 15-11 with 8:26 on the clock. Wilmington battled Mount Union to keep the game within four points, eventually getting ahead at 24-22 with less than a minute to go. A basket inside the paint by Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) tied the game 24-24 going into the break.
Mount Union opened the third quarter by going on a 8-2 run, six of those points coming from Sanborn, before taking off and outscoring Wilmington 32-18. The Raiders would hold a double digit lead of 56-42 with eight players scoring to close out the quarter.
Wilmington was able to cut Mount Union's lead back down to nine at 7:19, sparking a 13-5 run to only trail Mount Union 66-65 with 42 seconds to play. Three striaght free throws by Anna Alkire (Massillon/Jackson) would cushion Mount Union's advantage before Wilmington tied the game once again at 69-69 with 10 seconds on the clock. Free throws continued to pay off for the Raiders, going 3-for-3 to close out the game with a victory at 72-69.
Mount Union returns home to host No. 19 Marietta on Wednesday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m.
