Women's Basketball: Tinkey's Career High Leads Mount Union in Victory Over Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated Baldwin Wallace 83-72 Wednesday night at Urpsrung Gymnasium.

The Purple Raiders (14-10, 11-6 OAC) were led by junior guard Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) who recorded a career-high 29 points. Also scoring in double figures was Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) with 18 points. 

Baldwin Wallace (14-10, 10-7 OAC) was led by Hannah Fecht's 18 points and six rebounds. 

BW's Hannah Fecht sunk the first shot of the game for the Jackets in the first three seconds of the game. After that moment, Mount Union and BW would go shot-for-shot until a three by sophomore Tori Rappach (Warren/Howland) would give Mount Union their first lead of the quarter greater than one point at 10-7 with 5:47 to go. The Raiders proceeded to go on a 6-1 run to end the quarter ahead 16-8.

At the start of the second quarter, BW was able to cut Mount Union's lead in half on three separate ocassions, last at 20-16 with 7:04 to play, but a 5-0 run by Tinkey allowed Mount Union to push their lead back up to 25-16. BW soon responded with three consecutive three's before another individual run, this time by senior Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) Sanborn followed up with a pair of free throws from to push their lead back to six at 31-25 at the two-minute mark. Sophomore guard Zanny Sauter (Avon/Avon) topped off the lead with a buzzer beater three to make it 37-29.

The third quarter opened up with an 8-5 scoring battle of Fecht versus Tinkey to make it 42-37 at 8:02. BW would close in on Mount Union's lead at 48-45 but Tinkey was able to get another set of back-to-back buckets to give her 12 third-quarter points, lengthening Mount Union's advantage to 53-45 with 4:20 to play. Tinkey would get some assistance by Sanborn as she scored the final six points for Mount Union as they would be ahead of BW 59-52. 

BW again got off to a strong start in the fourth quarter, shrinking Mount Union's lead to two at 64-62 with 6:51 remaining; their smallest lead since the opening quarter. Mount Union stormed back to go on a 10-4 run supported by five points from Rappach, making their advantage 74-66 at 3:19. Free throws from freshman Brin Stralka (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) and junior Anna Alkire (Massillon/Jackson) gave Mount Union their largest and first double-digit lead of the game at 77-66 with 2:12 left, eventually putting them up for good 83-72.

Mount Union will next travel to Westerville, Ohio for their OAC regular-season finale on Saturday, February 17 at 3:00 p.m.
