AUSTINTOWN, Ohio -- The Mount Union women's basketball team has been voted fifth in the 2018-19 Ohio Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
Receiving 52 points and a first place vote, the Purple Raiders are close behind Marietta who sits fourth with 54 points and a first place vote. Baldwin Wallace (74), Capital (67), Ohio Northern (59) round up the top three with Baldwin Wallace and Capital capturing five of the 10 first place votes.
Entering her 14th season as head coach, Suzy Venet welcomes back 11 letterwinners and brings in talented group of freshmen. Among those 11 letterwinners are five seniors in Anna Alkire (Massillon/Jackson), Renee DeFord (Casstown/Miami East), Meghan Hess (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley), Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) and Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield).
Venet and the Raiders are looking forward to what the upcoming season will bring and look pick up right where they left off. In 2017-2018, Mount Union went 10-5 to close out the season and landed in third place prior to the conference tournament. Within that spurt, they knocked off No. 23 Marietta 82-60 after only previously losing the first match up by two.
Mount Union begins their season against Waynesburg (Pa.) Friday, November 16 at 8:00 p.m. at the Penn State-Behrend Tip-Off Tournament in Erie, Pa.
