UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Mount Union women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season to John Carroll (4-3, 1-1 OAC) 61-58 Wednesday night at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
Senior guard Rachel Tinkey (Canfield) led the Purple Raiders (6-1, 1-1 OAC) with 15 points and a season-high nine rebounds. Behind her on the boards was Hannah Schaefer (Dublin/Dublin Coffman) with seven rebounds, matching her season-best.
John Carroll was led by Nicole Heffington's 22 points and eight rebounds.
An early foul sent John Carroll to the line at 9:51 where they would tab just one out of two attempts. More than a minute later, Tinkey put Mount Union on the board at 2-1 for their only lead of the first quarter. John Carroll put together an 11-4 run to push their lead to 12-5 with just under five minutes to play and force a Mount Union timeout. A pair of three's by Brin Stralka (Tallmadge) got the Raiders within one at 12-11 but John Carroll carried out the quarter ahead 18-16.
Two quick buckets by Renee DeFord (Casstown/Miami East) and Tinkey opened the second quarter to tie the score at 20-20. John Carroll continued to knock down jumpers from all over the floor, retaking their lead, but Mount Union would not let them get ahead by more than three points. The two squads went shot-for-shot through the remainder of the half and a bucket at the top of the key by Schaefer tied it once again at 32-32 going into halftime.
To start the second half, John Carroll opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run before a baseline three by Tori Rappach (Warren/Howland) would slow things down but still trail 37-35. A few possession's later, a trip to the free throw line for Meghan Hess (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) knotted up the score at 39-all. John Carroll's previous offense run was then rekindled with an 11-2 scoring surge to take their largest lead of the game at 50-41.
Fourth quarter, Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg) and Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills/Padua Franciscan) produced four quick points to open the final ten minutes. A series of second-chance baskets for John Carroll allowed them to sustain their lead at 53-45 with 7:20 to go. Corenna Maynard's (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) only shot was good from behind the arc at 4:47 ignited a 9-0 run for the Raiders resulted in their first lead since the second quarter and their largest at 58-55. An inside look under the hoop got John Carroll within a point at 58-57 with a minute and a half left. Down the stretch, Mount Union couldn't find the shots needed to seal the win and John Carroll went four-for-four from the foul line to ultimately close out the game, winning 61-58.
Mount Union next returns home to host Wilmington Saturday, December 8 at 3:00 p.m.
