Women's Basketball: Sweet Sixteen; Raiders Match Season-High 16 Three's to Beat Capital

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated Capital 77-68 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

Tori Rappach (Warren / Howland) and Rachel Tinkey (Canfield) each hit six three-pointers and each scored a game-high 18 points as the Purple Raiders matched their season-high with 16 three-pointers.

Mount Union also got 10 points from Sarah Hessel (Avon Lake) while Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg) had a double-double with 10 points and a season-high 12 rebounds as the Raiders moved to 11-2 overall and 4-2 in the OAC.

Carlie Hulette had 16 points to lead Capital (8-5, 3-3 OAC).

Rappach hit a pair of three's on the Raiders first four possessions to help stake Mount Union out to an early 10-4 lead. The Crusaders rallied as Hulette sparked an 11-5 surge that gave the Capital a 15-14 lead with 3:38 left in the first quarter. There were three more lead changes in the quarter with Mount Union scoring six of the final seven points on a pair of Tinkey three-pointers to lead 23-21.

Mount Union then went on a 19-6 run to start the second quarter capped by a Rappach three-pointer that gave the Raiders a 42-27 lead with just under four minutes to play in the half. The Raiders would go on to take a 13-point lead, 44-31, into the break.

The Raiders eventually pushed the lead to 21 points, 60-39, when Renee DeFord (Casstown / Miami East) got a basket and a free throw with 4:42 left in third quarter. Mount Union then went on to the nine-point victory.

Mount Union next plays at Muskingum in an OAC matchup Wednesday, January 9 at 7 p.m. in New Concord.
