Women's Basketball: Raiders Pick Up Road Win at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Mount Union's women's basketball team defeated Muskingum 70-55 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday at the Anne C. Steele Center.

The Purple Raiders (12-2, 5-2 OAC) were led by senior guard Rachel Tinkey's (Canfield) 17 points and eight rebounds. Also in double figures was sophomore guard Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills/Padua Franciscan), who came off the bench with a season-high 11 points and a career-high seven rebounds along with senior forward Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg) as she logged 10 points. 

Muskingum falls to 1-13 overall and 0-7 in the OAC as Erica Hyre led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds. 

Muskingum hit two quick shots to lead Mount Union 4-2 after the first three possessions, but it would be the only lead the Muskies would see for the remainder of the game. Seven different Raiders hits shots in the first quarter, with Anna Alkire (Massillon/Jackson) leading the charge with five points as Mount Union took an 18-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.   

Mount Union began the second quarter with a 9-4 run fueled by a pair of three's from Tori Rappach (Warren/Howland), extending its lead to 13 points, 27-14, at the 7:27 mark. Muskingum put up six unanswered points to cut the deficit to 27-20, but Tinkey scored eight of Mount Union's next 10 points, giving the Raiders their largest lead of the half at 37-20. Muskingum closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run but would still trail Mount Union at halftime, 37-28.

Opening the third quarter with a pair of jump shots, Muskingum's offense outscored Mount Union 18-13 to win the quarter and get within four points at 50-46. The Raiders responded in the fourth with an explosive 20-3 scoring surge advancing their lead to 21 points, 70-49, with two and a half minutes to play. Muskingum scored the final six points of the game as Mount Union went on to win, 70-55.

Mount Union next travels to Westerville for an OAC game against Otterbein Saturday, January 12 at 3 p.m.
