MARIETTA, Ohio – Mount Union women's basketball team lost 74-71 at Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Wednesday at Ban Johnson Arena.
The Pioneers got a three-pointer from Marlo Taylor with three seconds to go for the game winner.
Rachel Tinkey (Canfield) scored a game-high 20 points and Jamie Sanborn (Twinsburg) had 11 as the Purple Raiders fell to 16-6 overall and 9-6 in the OAC.
Taylor and Shay Lett each had 15 points to lead Marietta (14-8, 9-6 OAC).
The Raiders led the entire first quarter and a Tori Rappach (Warren / Howland) three-pointer with just under six minutes left in the period gave them a 15-11 lead. Mount Union would take a 20-17 lead into the second quarter.
A Corenna Maynard (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) three-pointer and a Sarah Hessel (Avon Lake) layup gave the Raiders a 25-17 lead to start the second quarter. Mount Union led 30-22 with 5:23 left in the period before Marietta finished the half on a 14-4 run to take a 36-34 lead into the break.
The third quarter featured five lead changes and three ties before Mount Union scored four of the final five points of the quarter to lead 56-54.
Marietta started the fourth quarter on a 15-8 run and led 69-64 with 3:29 to play but Mount Union would score five of the next seven points to tie the game at 71-71 with 1:47 left. There was only one more field goal the rest of the game and it was Taylor's game-winner.
Mount Union next plays at Heidelberg as part of a doubleheader with the men's team with the women's game scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Tiffin.
