WOOSTER, Ohio – Mount Union's women's basketball team defeated Oberlin College 65-51 Saturday afternoon at the Nan Nichols Classis in Wooster, Ohio.
The Purple Raiders (2-0) were led by senior Tori Rappach (Warren / Howland) and junior Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) with 14 points. Junior Sarah Hessel (Avon Lake) and senior Hannah Schaefer (Dublin / Dublin Coffman) contributed with a team-high 12 rebounds.
Oberlin (0-2) was led by Sammy Spanier with 17 points.
Mount Union took their first lead of the game 5-3 after two foul shots from Hailey Peoples-O'Neil (Geneva). The Raiders went on a 12-7 run to extend the lead 17-10 after the first quarter.
Oberlin struck first with a three-pointer to start the second quarter, but Rappach responded with a three-pointer of her own to make the score 20-13. The Yeowomen bounced back with an 11-6 surge to cut the deficit to 26-24 to head into halftime.
Rauhe opened the second half with a foul shot to extend the Raider lead to 27-24 with 8:10 left to play in the third quarter. The Raiders ended the third quarter with a 15-4 run to take the advantage 42-30.
Mount Union led the entire fourth quarter only allowing Oberlin to come within 6 points, winning the game 65-51.
Mount Union next takes on Wooster in day two of the Nan Nichols Classic at 3 p.m. in Wooster, Ohio.
