Women's Basketball: Raiders Stung by #14 Baldwin Wallace at Home

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team fell to Ohio Athletic Conference opponent and No. 14 ranked Baldwin Wallace 71-49 Wednesday night at Timken Gymnasium. 

The Purple Raiders (6-6, 0-5 OAC) were led by junior Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) with 13 points and three rebounds. 

Lilly Edwards paced the Yellow Jackets (11-1, 5-0 OAC) with 18 points and three rebounds.

Mount Union opened the game with a three-pointer from freshman Madison Hensely (Blacklick / Gahanna Lincoln) taking the early lead 3-0, but Baldwin Wallace responded with eight unanswered points to give them their first lead of the game 8-3. Junior Brianna Gassman (Minerva) grabbed her first two points to cut BW's lead down to three, 8-5. The Yellow Jackets ended the quarter with a 4-0 surge, widening their advantage to 12-5. 

Baldwin Wallace outscored the Raiders 34-18 in the second quarter, giving them a 46-23 lead to head into halftime. 

The Yellow Jackets started the third quarter with a 5-0 run, but junior Sarah Turley (Sagamore Hills / Nordonia) scored Mount Union's first points of the second half to put the score at 51-25. Baldwin Wallace responded with another 5-0 surge, but a three-point by Tori Rappach (Warren / Howland) and a layup by Isi Palamone (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) brought the score back to 57-30. The Raiders finished out the quarter with a 5-3 run of their own to cut the Yellow Jackets lead down 60-35. 

Once again, Baldwin Wallace struck first in the final quarter with a three-point basket, but Rauhe responded quickly with a trifecta of her own sparking an 8-2 run. Both teams traded baskets to end the game, giving the Yellow Jackets the 71-49 victory. 

The Raiders continue OAC play Saturday, Jan. 11 traveling to Columbus, Ohio to take on Capital at 3 p.m.
