ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated Muskingum in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up Wednesday night 100-70 at Timken Gymnasium.
The Purple Raiders (8-6, 2-5 OAC) were led by freshman Madison Hensley (Blacklick / Gahanna Lincoln) with a career-high 20 points. Also in double digits were juniors Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) and Brianna Gassman (Minerva) with 16 and 11 points, sophomore Hailey Peoples-O'Neil (Geneva) with 11, and freshman Anika Sweeney (Sylvania / Sylvania Northview) with 15 respectively.
Rauhe started the game with six unanswered points giving Mount Union the early 6-0 lead. The Raiders continued to extend their advantage, 21-9, with a 15-9 run, Sweeney led the surge hitting three three-pointers. The Muskies rallied going on a 9-2 run to end the first quarter cutting Mount Union's lead back to 23-18.
The Raiders outscored Muskingum 39-9 in the second quarter giving Mount Union the 62-27 lead heading into halftime.
The Muskies opened the third quarter with a 9-5 run, cutting back the Raiders lead 67-36. Gassman hit a layup at the 5:03 mark to spark a 13-8 run putting the score ay 80-45. Muskingum ended the quarter with a quick 7-3 run to reduce Mount Union's lead 83-52.
Muskingum outscored the Raiders 18-17 in the final quarter, but it was not enough giving Mount Union the 100-70 victory.
The Raiders continue OAC play Saturday, Jan. 18 as the host Otterbein at 3 p.m.
