Women's Basketball: Raiders Fall in Thriller at #24 John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team saw a late lead disappear in a 67-63 loss at No. 24 ranked John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Wednesday evening at the Decarlo Varsity Center.

The Purple Raiders (10-8, 4-7 OAC) led 60-50 with 5:10 left in the game but the Blue Streaks (15-2, 9-1 OAC) finished the game on a 17-3 run to remain in first place in the conference standings.

Mount Union got 16 points from both junior Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) and freshman Madison Hensley (Blacklick / Gahanna Lincoln) while freshman Kelsie Glass (Green) came off the bench with 10 points.

Olivia Nagy paced John Carroll with 15 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocked shots. 

John Carroll opened the game with a 5-0 run, but Mount Union responded with six unanswered to take its first lead of the game, 6-5. The Blue Streaks quickly regained the advantage with a 13-0 surge to give them an 18-6 lead. Junior Sarah Hessel (Avon Lake) made a lay-up at the 3:13 mark to ignite a 7-2 Mount Union run to end the first quarter to leave the Raiders behind 20-13. 

Mount Union scored five of the first seven points of the second quarter to make it 22-18 before John Carroll got four quick points to lead 26-18. Mount Union answered with a 12-2 run to take a 30-28 lead with 25 seconds left and John Carroll hit a shot at the buzzer to tie the game at 30-30 at halftime.

The Raiders then started the third quarter with eight consecutive points, highlighted by a pair of Hensley three-pointers, to take a 38-30 lead but John Carroll responded by scoring seven points in a row. Two more lead changes and two more ties happened in the quarter with the last of those coming on a Rauhe jumper at the horn to make it 47-47 heading into the fourth quarter.

Mount Union opened the final frame with a 13-3 run to take its largest lead of the night, 60-50 with 5:10 left before John Carroll's decisive run.

Mount Union returns home to play Ohio Northern in an OAC game Saturday at 3 p.m. in Timken Gymnasium.
