BEREA, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team fell to No. 12 Baldwin Wallace 80-53 in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up Wednesday evening at the Upsrung Gynmasium.
The Purple Raiders (14-10, 8-9 OAC) were led by junior Brianna Gassman (Minerva) with 10 points while junior Sarah Hessel (Avon Lake) and senior Hannah Schaefer (Dublin / Dublin Coffman) added six rebounds each.
Riley Schill paced the Yellow Jackets (22-2, 16-1 OAC) with 19 points and five assists.
Both teams kept the game close through the opening minutes with seven lead changes and three ties. Freshman Anika Sweeney (Sylvania / Sylvania Northview) hit a three-pointer at 4:32 mark to ignite a 10-0 run giving the Raiders their largest lead of the night 19-9. Baldwin Wallace scored one last point to close the quarter to head into the second period with a nine point deficit.
The Yellow Jackets started the second quarter with a 14-4 surge regaining the advantage 24-23, until sophomore Corenna Maynard (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) hit a trifecta to spark a 6-2 surge to put the Raiders back on top with 5:28 remaining in the half. Baldwin Wallace ended the half with an 8-2 run to take the lead 34-31.
In the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets continued to extend their lead, 58-41, outscoring Mount Union 24-10.
The Raiders fought back in the final quarter grabbing the first two points from sophomore Hailey Peoples-O'Neil (Geneva), but it wouldn't be enough as Baldwin Wallace widened their advantage to as many as 33 points winning the game 80-53.
Mount Union returns home for its final regular season conference game Saturday, Feb. 22 hosting Capital at 3 p.m.
