Women's Basketball: Raiders Head To Ohio Northern For OAC Quarterfinal Matchup

Mount Union travels to Ohio Northern in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the ONU Sports Center in Ada.

Tickets for the game will be available at the door and are $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, and $3 for non-OAC students. No parent passes are accepted but OAC Lifetime passes are accepted.

The Purple Raiders (14-11, 8-10) are the tournament's No. 6 seed and come into the tournament off losses to Baldwin Wallace and Capital this past week.

Mount Union is second in the OAC in scoring at 72.5 points per game and are eighth in the OAC in scoring defense allowing opponents 70.2 points per game.

Junior Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) leads the Raiders and is third in the OAC in scoring at 15.3 points per game. Junior Sarah Hessel (Avon Lake) tops the team and is third in the OAC in rebounding at 8.1 per game and sophomore Corenna Maynard (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) leads the team with 2.8 per game.

No. 3 seed Ohio Northern (19-6, 13-5) has won its last four games in a row and is 8-1 at home this season.

Ohio Northern is 10th in the conference in scoring at 61.8 points per game and second defensively allowing 55.0 points per game. Senior Emily Mescher averages a team-best 11.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while freshman Jaclyn Yankle averages 2.1 assists per game.

The Polar Bears swept the season series winning 58-57 on Dec. 7 in Ada and 70-63 on Feb. 1 in Alliance. Mount Union is 35-44 all-time against Northern and ONU has won eight of the last 10 meetings.

OAC Tournament History

It is the 31st OAC Tournament appearance for Mount Union and the Raiders have a 29-25 record and won titles in and 1998, 2011 2012 and 2016.

Ohio Northern is making its 32nd OAC Tournament appearance with a 24-27 record with four titles.

Mount Union and Ohio Northern have met seven previous times in the OAC Tournament with the Polar Bears winning four of those games.

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 256-152 (.627) in her 15th season at her alma mater.  She has led the Raiders have won four OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles with four trips to the NCAA Tournament including making it to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. She has 267 career coaching wins including a season as head coach at Manchester (Ind.) and also had assistant coaching stints at Minnesota State and Bowling Green.

Michele Durand (Bluffton '88) Durand is in her 19th season at the helm of the Ohio Northern women's basketball team. She's the all-time winningest coach in program history, laying claim to a 332-182 record, a .646 winning percentage. Under her guidance, the Polar Bears have won five OAC Regular Season titles, two OAC Tournament titles, and have appeared in four NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournaments. She also coached 11 seasons at Bluffton before coming to Ada and has announced her retirement for coaching at the end of this season.
