Women Basketball: Raiders Season Stopped in OAC Quarterfinals

ADA, Ohio - No. 6 seed Mount Union saw its season end with a 58-50 loss at No. 3 seed Ohio Northern in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening at the ONU Sports Center. 

The Purple Raiders were led by junior Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) with 14 points, while junior Brianna Gassman (Minerva) added 10. 

Abby Weeks paced the Polar Bears with a game-high 18 points. 

Mount Union struck first taking the 3-0 lead with a three-pointer from sophomore Corenna Maynard (Chagrin Falls / Kenston). The Polar Bears responded with an 8-2 run to take their first lead of the night 8-5. Back-to-back baskets from juniors Sarah Turley (Sagamore Hills / Nordonia) and Gassman put the Raiders back on top 9-8 with 4:47 left to play in the first quarter. Mount Union ended the quarter with a 7-4 run to extend the advantage 16-12.

Ohio Northern held the Raiders to just seven points to take the lead into halftime 28-23. 

The Polar Bears took their largest lead of the night, 37-25, after starting the third quarter off with a 9-2 run. Senior Zanny Sauter (Avon) scored five unanswered points to spark a 10-0 surge to cut Northern's lead down to two, 37-35, with 53 seconds remaining. Ohio Northern hit a three to end the quarter with the 40-35 advantage. 

Sophomore Hailey Peoples-O'Neil (Geneva) scored four consecutive points in the opening minutes of the final quarter to ignite a 6-2 run to bring the Raiders back within one point, 42-41, at the 8:21 mark. Mount Union was unable to regain the lead as the Polar Bears finished the game with a 16-9 run, winning 58-50.
