CORTLAND, N.Y. - Mount Union's women's lacrosse team was defeated 21-8 by Catholic in the third round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday in Cortland, N.Y.
The Purple Raiders (19-1) finish the season with the most single season wins and best winning percentage in program history.
Mount Union was led in the game by Katherine Doraty (Medina/Medina) and Emily Bergert (North Canton/Hoover) who scored a pair of goals each. Doraty finishes the season with 66 goals, a new school record.
Catholic (16-3) was led by Ana Brandenburg with four goals while Tricia Pehnke made seven saves in the win.
Catholic scored the first goal of the game to take an early lead but Mount Union responded with Doraty's first goal. Mount Union trailed 2-1 before taking the lead 3-2 on goals by Susie Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and another goal from Doraty.
The game was tied again at 4-4 before the Cardinals scored the last nine goals of the half to lead 13-4 at the break.
Catholic's run continued with the first two goals of the second half to take a 15-4 lead with 25:26 left in the game. Mount Union put back-to-back goals together to trim the lead to nine, 15-6 with 16:41 remaining.
The Cardinals closed the game by outscoring the Raiders 6-2 to make the final score 21-8.
