FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Mount Union women's lacrosse team defeated Fredonia (N.Y.) 21-6 in its season opener Saturday afternoon at University Stadium in New York.
Mount Union (1-0) was led by senior Marjie McNamara (Champlin, Minn. / Champlin Park) with a game-high five goals. Junior Ashley Bernardi (Medina / Medina) and sophomore Danielle Rohrman (Olney, Md. / Sherwood) each contributed four goals and two assists to pace the Raider offense. Sophomore goalie Mimi Curtis (Lititz, Pa. / Manheim Township) led the defense with five saves.
Fredonia's (0-1) Audrey Yokopovich led the team with two goals.
The Raiders got off to a hot start, leading 2-0 after goals from McNamara and freshmen Sydney Bumbarger (Newbury Park, Calif. / Newbury Park) with 23:42 remaining in the first half. The Blue Devils quickly answered back with a goal, reducing the Raider lead to 2-1. But Mount Union caught fire, scoring 13 unanswered goals in the final 23 minutes action in the first half to take a 15-1 lead at halftime.
The first half surge was led by a trio of Raiders. McNamara scored 4 goals while Bernardi and Rohrman tallied five points each.
Bernardi opened the second half with a goal 1:53 into play. Fredonia would answer back with a goal but the Mount Union offense would be too much to handle as they scored three straight goals to extend the lead to 19-2 with 15:11 to play.
The Raiders scored an additional two goals in the half to seal a 21-6 victory over the Blue Devils.
