Women's Lacrosse: Raiders Take First Loss of the Season in NCAA Second Round

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Mount Union took its first loss of the season in an 18-6 to Mary Washington (Va.) in second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship at Battleground Complex.

The Purple Raiders, in the NCAA Tournament for a fifth straight year in its sixth sesaon of existence, end its season at 17-1 overall while Mary Washington at 17-4 overall advances to the sectionals (round of 16) next weekend.

"I am so proud of our entire team, especially our seniors, and the work they have put in all season," commented Mount Union head coach Emily Fisher. "Mary Washington is a great team and their play in draw controls and defense was strong."

The Eagles scored three goals in the first nine minutes before Ashley Bernardi (Medina) put the Raiders on the board and made it 3-1 with 19:14 to play.

Mary Washington then scored seven more times over the next 14 minutes to take control and extend the lead to 10-1. Danielle Rohrman (Olney, Md. / Sherwood) got the Raiders second goal with 3:55 left in the half but the Eagles scored two more to lead 12-2 at the break.

The Raiders mounted a rally early in the second half scoring three of the first five goals of the second half – two from Sydney Bumbarger (Newbury Park, Calif.) and one from Bernardi to close the gap to 14-5 with 15:26 remaining.

Mary Washington then scored four-straight to push the lead out to 18-5 before Katie Elder scored for the 18-6 final.

Bumbarger and Bernardi each scored two goals to lead the Raiders while Julia Albert had five goals for Mary Washington.
