Schindel All-American For Second Year in a Row After 7th Place Finish at NCAA Wrestling Championships

(CEDAR RAPIDS, IA)--Junior Bill Schindel (Tallmadge/Akron Hoban) earned All-American honors for a second straight year with a seventh place finish at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, IA.  Schindel is one of three Raiders at the national meet along with Riki Reynolds (Marion/Marion Pleasant) at 125, Richie Clark (Solon/Solon) at 149 who both fell in their first two matches.

Schindel, an All-American with an eighth place finish as a junior last year, entered this year's championship as the No. 6 seed and opened with an 8-6 win over Martin Porter of Delaware Valley (PA).  His next match was a 6-4 loss to No. 3 seed Andy Moore of UW-LaCrosse.  In the consolation bracket, he scored a major decision (13-4) over Adam Latella of UW-Whitewater, before losing a tough 7-6 decision to Zach Pizarro of Wilkes (PA).  He will closed out the tournament with a 4-3 decision over Martino Sottile of Cortland State (NY) in the seventh place match.

Reynolds drew a tough matchup to start as he was pinned by three-time All-American and fourth seeded Jake Oster of Elmhurst (IL).  He then was edged out in a 6-5 heartbreaker in the consolation bracket to George Gogonas of Augustana (IL).  Reynolds finished a fantastic freshman season with a 23-8 record.

Clark, a fifth year senior finished with a team-high 26 wins (26-14) on the season.  He took a 7-4 loss to fifth seeded Isaac Dukes (37-2) from Case Western Reserve in the opener then fell 6-2 to Isaiah Britton of Lycoming (PA) in the consolation bracket.

Schindel at 21-2 on the season is seeded sixth in the 197 bracket and the junior was an All-American after an eighth place finish a year ago.  He will take on Martin Porter of Delaware Valley (PA) to open this year's championship.

The top eight finishers in each weight class earn All-American honors.
