Wrestling Opens Season With Second Place Finish At Mount Union Invitational

ALLIANCE, Ohio—Mount Union's Wrestling team finished in second place at the Mount Union Invitation Saturday afternoon in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

The Purple Raiders finished in second place with 141 points, which was 39 points behind first place Lake Erie College, and 12 points ahead of third place West Liberty University. 

Sophomore Alex Poinar (Uniontown/North Canton Hoover) placed second in the 125 lb weight class and scored 14 points towards the team score. Poinar advanced to the final, but was defeated 2-0 by Ian Ross of Lake Erie College. 

Freshmen Seth McCurdy (Delaware/Delaware Hayes), Jeremy Border (Caldwell/Caldwell), and sophomore Kit Creager (McGuire Air Force Base, N.J./New Egypt) all competed in the 133 lb weight class and finished sixth, third, and eight respectively in the invitational for that weight class. 

In the 141 lb weight class, Chandler Pope (Dunedin, Fla./Dunedin), junior Cody Wiltshire (Adena/Buckeye Local), and sophomore Pete Hughes (Newark/Utica) competed for the Raiders, with Hughes placing fifth and scoring 13 points for the Raiders, and Pope placing seventh. Wiltshire received a bye in the first round, but was defeated in the quarterfinals by Kevin Brunner of Lake Erie College. 

Five Purple Raiders wrestled at the 149 lb weight class: freshmen Tim Reynolds (Upatoi, Ga/Columbus),  Branden Parker (Canton/GlenOak), junior Tyler Johnston (Lyndhurst/Brush), and sophomore Ben Kazimir (Auburn Twp./Kenston) and senior Chad Rhoades (Uniontown/Lake). Reynolds placed eighth, while Parker lost in the first round of the consolation match and took the match to sudden death, but was defeated by Jacob Brown of Lake Erie College. Kazmir lost in the first round of the consolation matches to Tyler Green of Ohio Valley University, while Rhoades placed fourth and score 15.50 points for the Raiders. 

Sophomore Jon Garrison (Fairlawn/Copley) was the only Raider to compete in the 157 lb weight class and placed fifth to score 12 points for the Raiders. 

Senior Jeremy Regula (Dundee/Claymont), junior Joe Schindel (Tallmadge/Akron Hoban), sophomore Nick Hendershot (Willoughby/Willoughby South), and sophomore Chad Ziegler (Burton/Middlefield Cardinal) all competed at the 165 lb weight class. Regula and Schindel advanced to the finals where they were matched up against each other, with Regula winning the match 4-0 in sudden death and scoring16 team points. Hendershot placed eight in the competition, while Zeigler placed seventh. 

Sophomore Brent Kirk (Adena/Buckeye Local) wrestled at the 174 lb weight class for the Raiders and placed sixth, scoring 10.50 points for Mount Union, while freshman Brian Deming (Madison/Perry) wrestled at 184 for the Raiders and scored 7.50 points for the team. 

Sophomores Divon Jones (South Euclid/Brush), Joe Farina (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades), Joe Monroe (Mantua/Crestwood), freshmen Brian Goodnight (Rootstown/Rootstown), Lucas Dies (Akron/Manchester) and Kyle Graves (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill), junior Nick Rajcsak (Stow/Stow) and senior Darin Lyles (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) all wrestled at the 197 lb weight class for the Raiders. Jones, Farina, and goodnight all lost in the second consolation round to Nate Hipp (West Liberty University), Darin Lyles (Mount Union), and Joe Monroe (Mount Union) respectively. Monroe placed sixth, while Lyles placed eighth. 

Dies finished second in the competition at 197 lbs and scored 18.50 points for the Raiders, Rajcsak placed third, and Graves lost in the second consolation round to Nick Rajcsak (Mount Union). 

Senior Nick Terifaj (Brook Park/Strongsville)competed at 285 lbs for the Raiders and place third earning 13.50 points for the team. 

Mount Union's next event will be the Mount Union Duals Sat. Nov. 17 at 11:00 a.m. in the MAAC.
