Wrestling: Raiders Hang Tough With Division II No. 3 Ranked Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio -- No. 10 ranked in NCAA Division III Mount Union held its own with No. 3 ranked in NCAA Division II Ashland but the Eagles scored a 24-10 win Wednesday in Ashland.

The Purple Raiders won three of the first five matches to take a 10-6 lead but Ashland swept the final five matches, picking up bonus points in three of them to get the win.

It was the first dual meet loss of the season for Mount Union (8-1) while Ashland moves to 3-3 in dual meets.

Mount Union picked up wins in three weight classes highlighted by a 15-7 major decision from freshman Luke Hernandez (Nashport / Tri-Valley) at 149 pounds. The Raiders other two wins came in a 3-0 win from senior Trent Gill (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) at 125 pounds and an 8-5 win from freshman Michael McIntire (Wadsworth / Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) at 157.

Mount Union returns home to host the Purple Raider Open Sunday, Jan. 14 at Peterson Fieldhouse.
