Wrestling: No. 7 Mount Union Competes at NCAA Central Regional

ADRIAN, Mich. –- The No. 7 ranked Mount Union wrestling team will compete at the NCAA Central Regional this weekend, Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Feb. 29 at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan.

The top three finishers in each of the 10 weight classes will advance to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships taking place March 13-14 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Purple Raiders placed third in the regional a year ago with eight placers and three champions with six of those placers and two champions returning this year.

Leading the group of returners is junior Jordin James (Bedford) who won regional and national titles at 133 pounds a year ago. This year he is ranked No. 2 in the nation at 141 pounds with a 22-2 record and is the Ohio Athletic Confernece Wrestler of the Year.

Junior Luke Hernandez (Nashport / Tri-Valley) has placed sixth and second at 149 pounds in the last two regional events and went on to an All-American finish in 2019. In 2020, Hernandez is nationally ranked fourth at 149 pounds with a 20-5 record and was an All-OAC first team pick.

Antown Pugh (Copley) won the 157-pound regional title and placed second in the nation last year and this year the junior has battled injuries and is ranked eighth in the nation with a 16-3 record.

The other returning placers from a year ago was a fourth at 165 pounds from Michael McIntire (Wadsworth / St. Vincent-St. Mary) and fifth place finishes from David Massey (Cuyahoga Falls / Woodridge) at 141 pounds and Landon Talbert (Salem / Crestview) at 197 pounds.

McIntire is 14-4 this year, Massey has a team-high 32-wins at 133 pounds and was an All-OAC second team selection and Talbert is 17-12.

Senior Grant Martin (Hartville / Lake) enters the regional ranked seventh in the nation and an All-OAC first team selection at 285 pounds. He had the OAC's most falls in the least amount of time honor as the senior pinned all six OAC wrestlers he faced in a combined time of 7:58 and is 24-3 overall with 15 pins.

Another senior in Conner Homan (Loveland) has 29 wins on the season and was the All-OAC second team pick at 174 pounds.

Seth Hayes (Rootstown) at 125 pounds and George Lassnick (Painesville / Lake Catholic) at 184 pounds round out the Raiders regional competitors.
