DEFIANCE, Ohio—Sophomore Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) scored a school-record five goals to lead Mount Union to a 9-1 win at Defiance Tuesday afternoon.
The win snapped a three-game skid for the Purple Raiders to raised their record to 3-4 while the nine goals matched a team single-game record that has been done two previous times -- at home against Defiance a year ago and in 1991 against Hiram.
Defiance (0-5) led the game 1-0 as Miranda Herevia scored the Yellow Jackets first goal of the season in the ninth minute.
It took only 19 more seconds for the Raiders to take their first lead as Lanese scored off an assist from senior Taylor Lanese (Parma/Valley Forge).
Mount Union tacked on two more goals in the first half from sophomore Hailee Brown (Chesterland/West Geauga) in the 36th minute before Lanese scored her second in the 44th minute as the Raiders led 4-1 at the break.
Lanese then scored three straight goals for Mount Union in a span of 4:31 early in the second half to extend the lead to 7-1.
Goedecke notched her second goal of the game in the 59th minute while Balzano, who also had two assists, finished the scoring with a goal in the 63rd minute.
Sophomore Brooke Schmidt (Massillon/Jackson) also had two assists for the Raiders.
Mount Union next plays on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. against Grove City (Pa.) at Mount Union Stadium.
