COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mount Union sophomore Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) recorded a hat trick to lead the No. 3 seed Purple Raiders to a 3-2 upset of No. 2 seed Capital in the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Thursday in Columbus.

It was the second hat trick of the season for Lanese, who has a now a school-record 22 goals on the season which bested the previous mark of 21 set by Jill Martin in 1998.

Lanese, who also tops the conference with 46 points on the season, leads Mount Union in Saturday's championship game for the third time in school history and first since 1996.

Capital (9-8-1) took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of the game as Caroline Hester headed in a corner kick.

Lanese's first goal tied the game in the 25th as she worked from 30 yards out and sent an unassisted score to the net.

The scored stayed that way until the opening minute of the second half when Mary Bushee finished one inside the box and gave Capital a 2-1 lead.

Lanese again answered this time in the 57th minute off a pass from Katie Goedecke (Cuyahoga Falls/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) to tie the game.

The game winner came off a deflection in the 79th minute that Lanese finished to complete the hat trick.

Paige Freel (Niles/Niles McKinley) got eight saves in goal to get her eighth win of the season in goal for the Raiders.

Mount Union, which is unbeaten in its last 10 games, plays in the title game Saturday at top seeded Ohio Northern, a 2-0 winner over No. 5 Baldwin Wallace in the other semifinal.

The Raiders unbeaten streak started after a 2-1 loss to Ohio Northern October 1 in Alliance.
