Mount Union Meets #3 Trinity (Texas) in NCAA Women's Soccer First Round Saturday in Illinois

Mount Union will play No. 3 nationally ranked Trinity University (Texas) in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday, Nov. 12 at noon at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinios.

The Purple Raiders (12-6-3) received an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament title with a 2-1 overtime win at Ohio Northern. It is the first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for the Raiders, who enter the tournament on a school-record 11-game unbeaten streak. Mount Union is one of 43 conference champions to automatically qualify for the 64-team NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) leads the team and is seventh nationally with a school single-season record 22 goals this season and she also leads the Raiders in points with 47. Senior Carolyn Balzano (Poland/Poland Seminary) leads the team in assists with a school single season record tying 11. In goal, junior Paige Freel (Niles/Niles McKinley) has a 1.33 goals against average and is 9-2-3 in goal this season.

No. 3 Trinity, located in San Antonio, Texas, is 20-0-0 overall and the Tigers are making their 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance. The top seeded team in this four-team pod, Trinity, won its eighth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) championship with a 2-1 win over Southwestern (Texas).

Trinity is second in the nation in goals this season with 91 and have allowed just one first half goal this season. Offensively, Yasmeen Farra leads the Tigers with 13 goals and six assists for a total of 32 points while Brigitte Taylor has a team-best nine assists. In goal, keeper Janie Thompson has allowed two goals in 15 games played this season, making nine saves.

The winner of this matchup will play in a second round game between the winner of a matchup between Hanover (Ind.) and host Illinois Wesleyan Sunday at 2 p.m. 

Illinois Wesleyan is 12-5-3 and earned the automatic bid of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) into the NCAA championships. This marks the fourth consecutive tournament appearance for the Titans and in 2016 they outscored opponents 34-21.

Hanover is also making its fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament following a 1-0 victory over Franklin in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament Championship. Hanover sports a 13-5-0 record overall and went 8-1 in the HCAC. The Panthers are winners of their last nine and have won 12 of their last 13 matches.
