Women's Soccer: Mount Union Great With Eight For First Win

HIRAM, Ohio -- Seven different players scored as the Mount Union women's soccer team posted an 8-0 season-opening win over Thiel (Pa.) Saturday at the Hiram Classic in Hiram, Ohio.

Sophmore Maggie O'Donnell (Avon/Avon) had two goals and an assist to lead the Purple Raiders, who took control of the game with three goals in the opening 20 minutes and had a commanding 5-0 lead at the break.

O'Donnell started the scoring in the fourth minute with an unassisted goal then assisted on a Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) score 3:33 later to put the Raiders up 2-0.

Mount Union's three other first half goals were unassisted scores from Katie Goedecke (Cuyahoga Falls/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) in the 20th minute and sophomores Julia Krause (Crestwood / Mantua) and Lauren Beech (United Local / Hanoverton) in the 36th and 37th minute respectively.

O'Donnell got her second goal just 1:23 into the second half to extend the lead to 6-0, then goals from Abbie Andrews (Brecksville-Broadvie Hts / Broadview Heights) and Brittany McCauley (Ontario / Ontario) finished the scoring.

Senior Paige Freel (Niles/McKinley) played all 90 minutes in goal for her career fifth shutout.

Mount Union returns to Hiram Sunday at 3 p.m. for a match against Franciscan.
