Women’s Swimming And Diving Sets Three School Records On Day One; Raiders in Third Place
AKRON, Ohio -- Mount Union's women's swimming and diving team set three records on its way to claiming third place after day one of the Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Ocasek Natatorium at The University of Akron.
Junior Courtney Gabel (Fremont/Fremont Ross) repeated as champion in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.91 seconds. Earlier in the day, Gabel set a new meet record, school record and posted an NCAA 'B' cut in the preliminaries with a time of 23.86 seconds.
Gabel was also part of the 200 freestyle relay team that included junior Shelbey Mitchell (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls), sophomore Carly Brown (Strongsville/Strongsville) and freshman Kaitlyn Goldsmith (Galloway/Hilliard Bradley) that finished the event in second place and set a new school record with a time of 1:37.67.
The 400 medley relay team of Mitchell, freshman Jessica Swanson (Uniontown/Lake), Gabel and Goldsmith finished third and set a new school record with a time of 4:00.98.
Mount Union finished day one in third place with a score of 185 points which was 13 points behind second place John Carroll (198) and 30 points behind first place Ohio Northern (215).
The top three finishers in individual events and the top two relay teams in each event earn all-conference honors.
Day two of the Championships continues tomorrow with preliminaries starting at 11:00 am and finals at 6:00 p.m.
