Gabel Wins Women’s Swimmer Of The Year; Raiders Finish Second
AKRON, Ohio - - Junior Courtney Gabel (Fremont/Fremont Ross) was named Ohio Athletic Conference women's Swimmer of the Year as she helped the Mount Union women's swimming and diving team to a second place finish at the 2013 OAC swimming and diving championships.
For the championships, Gabel earned all-conference in four events.
She is the fifth woman in school history and the first since 1999 to win the award.
Gabel finished first in three individual events as she took first place honors in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 breaststroke. She set school records in the 50 free with a time of 23.91, the 100 free with a time of 52.71 and in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.75. Her 50 free time and 100 breaststroke time earned NCAA "B" cut qualifications in both events.
Gabel was also part of the 200 freestyle relay team of junior Shelbey Mitchell (Stow-Stow-Munroe Falls), sophomore Carly Brown (Strongsville/Strongsville) and freshman Kaitlyn Goldsmith (Galloway/Hilliard Bradley) that finished in second place and set a new school record with a time of 1:37.67.
Mitchell also earned all-conference in the 100 backstroke as she finished third with a time of 59.27. In the preliminaries, Mitchell set a school record in the event with a time of 59.27.
Freshman Lauren Lammlein (Uniontown/Hoover) finished the longest event of the meet, the 1650 freestyle in first place with a time of 18:25.98.
Ohio Northern finished the championships in first place with 865 points, Mount Union second (714), John Carroll third (660), Transylvania fourth (424), Wilmington fifth (290) and Defiance sixth (133) to round out the six team field.
