AUSTINTOWN- Ohio - - Six Mount Union women's swimmers and divers earned Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors; seniors Elizabeth Juran (Independence/Independence), Megan McDonough (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Falls) juniors Carly Brown (Strongsville/Strongsville), Courtney Gabel (Fremont/Fremont Ross), Shelbey Mitchell (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and sophomore Wilma Levengood (New Philadelphia/New Philadelphia).
The six women's swimmers are part of 76 winter student-athletes honored that must be a sophomore or higher in class standing, maintain varsity status and have a cumulative grade-point-average of at least 3.50.
All six swimmers helped the Purple Raiders to a second place finish at this year's OAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
A communications major, Juran has a GPA of 3.82 and earned Academic All-Conference honors for the first time. Juran made the finals in four events at the OAC championships with her best finish coming in the 100 yard backstroke where she finished in eighth place with a time of 1:02.73.
An intervention specialist major, McDonough has a GPA of 3.92 and earned Academic All-OAC honors for the first time. Her best times of the season came in the 1000 yard freestyle where she had a time of 12:03.02 and in the 1650 yard freestyle where she had a time of 19:52.51.
A biology major, Brown has a GPA of 3.94 and earned Academic All-OAC honors for the first time. Brown earned All-Conference honors as part of the 200 free relay that finished second and set a new school record with a time of 1:37.67.
An exercise science major, Gabel has a GPA of 3.80 and earned Academic All-OAC honors for the second year in a row. Gabel was named the OAC Women's Swimmer Of the Year this season and earned All-Conference honors and set school records in four events, the 50 free (23.91), 100 free (52.71), 100 breast (1:05.75) and the 200 free relay (1:37.67).
A psychology major, Mitchell has a GPA of 3.59 and earned Academic All-OAC honors for the first time. Mitchell earned All-Conference honors in two events, the 200 free relay (1:37.67) and the 100 backstroke (59.27).
An art major with a GPA of 3.76, Levengood earned Academic All-OAC honors for the first time. Levengood made the finals in three events at the OAC champions with her best finishing coming in the 200 yard butterfly where she finished in fifth place with a time of 2:18.32.
