Mount Union's Mary Mahoney Named to Capital One Academic All-America Track & Field Team
TOWNSON, Md. -- University of Mount Union sophomore Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul) has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Women's Track & Field Thrird Team.
Mahoney is the 35th Academic All-American in school history and the first women's track and field selection for Mount Union since Heather O'Shea in 1994. She is also part of a Mount Union record four Academic All-Americans this academic year as players, Kyle Miller (Elida/Elida), Sam Kershaw (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) and Alex Ferrara (Independence/Walsh Jesuit) were all on the Academic All-American football team this past fall.
Mahoney was the Ohio Athletic Conferene Sprint Athlete of the Meet at the 2011 OAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships as she won the 400 meter dash in an OAC-record time of 56.10, the 200 meter dash, ran the second leg of the winning 4x100 meter relay and was the anchor on the winning 4x400 meter relay team. She also was an All-American with a third place finish in the 400 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Off the track she has a 3.95 grade point average with a major in Evironmental Science.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
Mount Union sports information director Leonard Reich has served on the national Academic All-America committee for nine years and has had 16 Academic All-Americans and two Academic All-American of Year Award winners.
