NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Mount Union women's track and field athletes Anna Jones (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer), Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul), Emily Mazzaferri (Canton/GlenOak), Annie Patton (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) and Kelsey Shonk (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) have been named to the All-Academic Team by the United Stated Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Purple Raiders five selections were more than any other Ohio Athletic Conference institution.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying marks in an individual or relay event. Participation in an NCAA Championship also fulfills the athletic component of All-Academic qualification.
Jones claimed All-American honors in the javelin as a junior this past season.
Mahoney was named OAC Sprint Athlete of the Meet as a sophomore this past season won the 400 meter dash in an OAC-record time of 56.10, the 200 meter dash in 25.52, ran the second leg of the winning 4x100 meter relay (48.55) and was the anchor on the winning 4x400 meter relay quartet (3:56.32). She went on to be an All-American in the 400 meters as well as being an Academic All-OAC and Academic All-American.
Mazzaferri was part of the OAC Champion 4x400 meter relay team as a freshman.
Patton earned All-OAC honors in the javelin and was an Academic All-OAC and Academic All-District selection.
Shonk won the OAC discus title and participated in the NCAA Championships as a junior in 2011.
The five led Mount Union to its second straight OAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
