Mount Union to Send 14 to NCAA Track & Field Championships in California

The University of Mount Union will have 14 student-athletes competing at the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Thursday-Saturday (May 24-26) at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Claremont, California.

Senior twin sisters Aubree and Anna Jones (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer), juniors Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul) and Daryn Herman (Fairview Park/Fairview), sophomores Taylor Ruffing (Attica/Seneca East), Lisa Brasdovich (Columbia Station/Columbia), Emily Mazzaferri (Canton/GlenOak) and Taylor Kring (Salem/West Branch) along with freshmen Taylor Coghlan (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) and Courtney Reese (Cleveland/Cornerstone Christian) will all compete on the women's side.

Aubree Jones is currently ranked third in the nation in the discus (153-1).  She was an All-American with a second place finish in the javelin a year ago and in 2010 competed at the NCAA meet in the discus and finished 13th.

Anna Jones is ranked 21st in the nation in the discus (142-9) and making her first NCAA appearance.

Mahoney is in four events and was the Ohio Athletic Conference Sprint Athlete of the Meet at the OAC Outdoor Championships last month.  She is seeded fourth in the 200 meters (24.37) and seventh in the 400 meters (55.56).  A year ago, she finished third and was an All-American in the 400 meters while two years ago she ran at the national meet in both the 200 and the 400.

Mahoney will also run in the 4x400 meter relay with Reese, Herman and Mazzaferri which is seeded fifth with a time of 3:47.27 while Mahoney, Ruffing, Brasdovich and Coghlan grabbed the 16th and final spot in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 47.65.

On the men's side, senior Sean Denard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North), sophomore Alex Kovalik (Aurora/Aurora) and freshmen Sean Donnelly (Willoughby/Willoughby South) and Tyler Mettille (Canfield/Canfield) all will compete. 

Denard is making his third straight NCAA appearance and is an All-American after finishing seventh in the discus in 2010.  This year he will compete in both the shot put and the discus. In the shot put, he is ranked seventh (56-5.25) and in the discus he is ranked eighth (53.13).

Donnelly will compete in the discus where he is ranked fifth (56-9.5) while Mettille will run in the 400 meter hurdles where he is ranked 15th (53.21).

Kovalik will compete in the decathlon where his 6,445 point total is the sixth-best total in the nation in the event that includes -- the 100 meter hurdles, shot put, discus, javelin, long jump, pole vault, 100 meter dash, high jump, 1500 meters and 400 meters.

The top eight finishers in each event earn All-American honors.  Mount Union has 41 different student-athletes over the years earn All-America honors.
