Mount Union Women Picked to Repeat as OAC Indoor Track & Field Champs

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio -- Mount Union's women's indoor track and field team was picked to defend its Ohio Athletic Conference title as they are in the top spot in the OAC Coaches Preseason Poll.

The Raiders, who won their second-ever and first title since 1986 a year ago, garnered eight of the nine possible first place votes and 64 points. Ohio Northern was second with 54 points, John Carroll was third with 47 and the final first place vote went to Capital in fourth place with 36 votes.  There are only nine teams ranked this year since Baldwin Wallace is not competing in the championship event.

Headlining the list of returners for Mount Union is senior Mary Mahoney, who was the OAC Sprint Athlete of the Meet and a two-event All-American at the NCAA Indoor Championships a year ago.

Mahoney won three individual events in the 60 meter dash (7.81), 200 meters (25.12) and 400 meters (56.73) and also helped the team win the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Her 400 meter time of 56.73 was a new OAC meet record.

Another returning conference champion and All-American is junior Emily Mazzaferri (Canton/GlenOak), who set a new OAC meet record in winning the 500 meter dash with a time 1:16.86 and along with senior Daryn Herman (Fairview Park/Fairview) was part of the champion 4x400 relay team.

Along with Mahoney, the rest of the winning 4x200 relay team from a year ago is back in sophomore Taylor Coghlan (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) and juniors Lisa Brasdovich (Columbia Station/Columbia) and Taylor Ruffing (Attica/Seneca East).

Sophomore Brooke Benner (Orrville/Orrville) is also a returning all-conference performer as she was third in the 1 mile run.

The OAC Indoor Track & Field Championships are Feb. 22-23 on the campus of Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.
