Volleyball Sixth in NCAA Great Lakes Region Poll; Raiders Travel to Capital on Saturday
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—Mount Union's volleyball team is ranked sixth in the initital NCAA Great Lakes Region Rankings of the season. The rankings are compiled by the NCAA Championships committee and are used to determine the field and seed the 2011 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship.
The 2011 NCAA Division III Championship consists of 64 teams with 42 of those spots given to conference champions, two spots reserved for independents and 20 national at-large bids. The regional rankings help determine those at-large spots, first round hosts and first round matchups.
Mount Union has played four of the teams ranked, picking up a 3-1 win over Otterbein in a non-conference match earlier in the season. They lost matches to Hope, Hiram, and Heidelberg. The Purple Raiders will play Otterbein again at home in the regular season finale next weekend.
Mount Union plays Capital Saturday at noon in Bexley, Ohio. The Raiders have already clinched a spot in the OAC Tournament and a victory on Saturday would guarantee a finish in the top four of the conference, giving them a first round home match.
