INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—Mount Union's volleyball team will make its second NCAA Tournament appearance an when it meets Lebanon Valley in the first round later this week. The contest will be played on the campus of Neumann University in Aston, Pa. on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
The Purple Raiders (24-7) defeated No. 9 Heidelberg on Saturday to win the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. OAC rules stipulate, however, that if the regular season champion reaches the final of the conference tournament, that school will receive the conference's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament. The win over Heidelberg improved the Purple Raiders' résumé and helped them receive one of 20 national at-large bids.
Lebanon Valley (22-9) earned an automatic bid by defeating Messiah (Pa.) to win the Commonwealth Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Dutchmen will make their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
The winner of the first round matchup plays the winner of a matchup between Juniata (Pa.) and Cabrini (Pa.) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 12.
In the other half of the region, host Eastern (Pa.) will face Penn State-Altoona and Hiram will take on Stevenson (Md.).
The regional final will be held Sunday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. and the winner will advance to the eight-team finals at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. beginning November 18th.
This trip to the NCAA Tournament is very similar to Mount Union's only other appearance in program history, which came in 2009. The Purple Raiders played Lebanon Valley in the first round, winning 3-1. They then lost 3-1 to Juniata, who is a possible second round opponent this time around as well.
