ALLIANCE, Ohio – No.14 ranked Mount Union swept a pair of matches beating Grove City (Pa.) 3-0 and Trine (Ind.) 3-1 Friday at the Purple Raider Classic at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
Against Grove City, Mount Union started close with a 25-22 win but came back in the last two sets and won 25-16 and 25-11. Sophomore Morgan Chapman (Seven Fields, Pa./Seneca Valley) led the raiders with nine kills while junior Caitlyn Synek (Independence/Independence) led close behind with eight kills. Fellow sophomore, Riley Schenk (Lorain/Amherst Steele) led the team in assists with 20 while senior Abby Riffee (Mineral Ridge/Mineral Ridge) led the team in digs with 11.
In the Trine match, the Raiders got a 25-20 win in the first set, but fell short with a 23-25 loss in the second set. The Purple Raiders finished off the match with the next two sets 25-20 and 25-21. Sophomore Mallory Sliman (Amherst/Amherst Steele) led the Raiders with eight kills while freshman Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) and Chapman had 19 and 17 digs each. Schenk led the Raiders in assists with 17 but Junior Kelly Johnson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) led close behind dishing out 15.
Mount Union plays in two matches Saturday against Bethany (W.Va.) at 12:00 p.m. and the second against Westminster (Pa.) at 4:00 p.m.
