COLUMBUS, Ohio- Mount Union's volleyball team started their Ohio Athletic Conference season with a 3-0 win at Capital Saturday at The Capital Center.
The Purple Raiders rolled to the straight set victory 25-16, 25-10, and 25-11 and moved to 12-6 overall on the season while Capital fell to 4-17.
Mount Union was led by Brooke Knollman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and Morgan Chapman (Seven Fields, Pa./ Seneca Valley) with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Riley Schenk (Lorain/Amherst Steele) led the team in assists with 19 while Elise Nickoli (Monroeville/Norwalk St. Paul) led in digs with 13.
Capital was led by Kasey Parkhurst with eight kills and Katie Weilbacher with 14 assists.
The score in game one was tied at 8-8 when the Raiders scored six-straight points to lead 14-8, Capital closed to within three points at 15-12 and 19-16 but Mount Union scored the last five points -- two on aces from Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) to win 25-16.
The Raiders jumped out to a 12-5 lead in game two, but Capital rallied again making the score 13-10. Four straight points from Mount Union including a pair of kills from Chapman stretched the lead back out to seven as the Raiders finished the game on an 11-0 run to win 25-10.
It was more of the same in the third game as again Mount Union ran out to a 12-5 lead and went on to the 25-11 win for the sweep.
Mount Union hit .321 for the match while Capital managed just a .082 hitting percentage.
The Raiders next host Marietta for the annual Dig for a Cure match Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
