Women's Volleyball: Three Raiders Travel to Costa Rica for Nine Days

ALLIANCE, Ohio- Three of Mount Union's volleyball players, sophomores Riley Schenk (Amherst/Amherst Steele) and Brooke Knollman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and freshman Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland), traveled to Costa Rica to play volleyball through an organization called Beyond Sports from May 11th– May 19th.

Beyond Sports is an international education and service-learning organization that uses sports as a vehicle to explore the world and create meaningful cross-cultural relationships.

"There were girls from all over the USA and we were the only Ohio school," explained Schenk. "It carried from NCAA Division III to some NAIA schools. We also worked two clinics for local Costa Rican youth kids as well as explore the country going zip lining, to downtown San Jose, La Fortuna and Punta Leona!"

While Schenk, Knollman and Jackson were in Costa Rica, there were two volleyball teams, two soccer teams and one women's basketball team. Knollman and Jackson played on the same team while Schenk was on the other team. They practiced once and played three games against two national teams and one local club team.

"It was such an amazing experience being able to travel and play in this beautiful country" stated Knollman, "I met some wonderful people and I'm so thankful to have had this opportunity to represent Mount Union and my country."
Knollman and Jackson earned All-OAC honors last season, Knollman being named to the second team while Jackson was tabbed as a honorable mention selection. The Purple Raiders start their 2016 season at the Mount Union Invitational against Grove City (Pa.) Friday, September 2 at 6:00 PM.
