ALLIANCE, Ohio- Mount Union's volleyball split a pair of games defeating SUNY Geneseo and losing to Wittenberg Saturday at the Mount Union Invitational at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
Against SUNY Geneseo, the Purple Raiders (x-x), defeated the Knights 23-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-5 and 15-12. Junior Morgan Chapman (Seven Fields, Pa./Seneca Valley) led the pack with 16 kills while junior Riley Schenk (Amherst/Amherst Steele) added 42 assists. Sophomore Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) led the defense with 26 kills.
Mount Union started off the match with a close loss in the first set 23-25. The Raiders came out strong in the second set defeating the Knights, but lost the third to a close 21-25.
Mount Union dominated the next two sets 25-5 and 15-12 with two big serving runs in the third set by Baird with eight serves and sophomore Mary Beth Keck (Strongsville/St. Joseph Academy) with nine.
The Knights were led by Courtney Cleary with 18 kills and Emily Ast with 41 assists.
Against Wittenberg, Mount Union lost in straight sets 25-21, 25-17, and 25-19. Leading the Raiders was senior Cailtyn Synek (Independence/Independence) with 11 kills and four blocks while Chapman added 10 kills. Schenk led in assists with 21 and also added 13 digs.
Mount Union will play in the Marcia French Invitational at Baldwin Wallace next weekend competing against Bethany (W.Va.), Defiance, R.I.T. (N.Y.) and Berry (Ga.) Friday Sept. 9 and Saturday Sept. 10.
