BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Mount Union's volleyball team swept both Lycoming (Pa.) and Brockport (N.Y.) in the first day at the Brockport State Invitational in Brockport, N.Y.
Against Lycoming, the Purple Raiders (8-2) swept past the Warriors (7-4) in straight sets 25-10, 25-20, 25-12. Junior Brooke Knollman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) led the Raiders with six kills while juniors Mallory Sliman (Amherst/Amherst Steele) and Morgan Chapman (Seven Fields, Pa./Seneca Valley) each tallied five kills.
Junior Riley Schenk (Amherst/Amherst Steele) led in assists with 12 while senior Kelly Johnson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) dished out nine. The Raiders defense was led by junior Celia Barrett (University Heights/Hathaway Brown) with 10 digs.
Mount Union started off the first set on an 8-0 run with sophomore Mary Beth Keck (Strongsville/St. Joseph Academy) serving. The Raiders did not let the Warriors come within seven points of them while also hitting a .381 hitting percentage as a team taking the first set 25-10.
The Raiders and Warriors kept the second close, with Mount Union keeping the lead throughout the set. The Raiders were up 24-17 when Lycoming went on a 3-0 run to try to catch the Raiders. A kill by Schenk would end the set 25-20.
In the third set, the Raiders took a commanding 12-2 lead with a 7-0 service run from Johnson. Mount Union kept their lead the entire third set to take the 25-12 win against Lycoming.
Lycoming was led by Alysa McDevitt with five kills and Catherine Burger with 12 assists.
Against Brockport, the Raiders swept the Golden Eagles (10-2) 25-13,25-20,25-23. The Raiders were led by Sliman with eight kills and Chapman also tallied seven. Schenk and Johnson had 28 assists combined while Sophomore Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) led the defense with 24 digs.
In the first set, the Raiders got off to an 8-0 start with Schenk serving. Mount Union kept an eight point or more lead the rest of the way, winning the first 25-13.
The Raiders and the Golden Eagles kept the second set close with Mount Union only leading by three points early in the set. The Raiders took a 15-10 lead but Brockport responded with a 7-2 run tying the game 17-17. Mount Union took the lead back with an error by Brockport and the Raiders did not look back winning the second 25-20.
In the third set, the Raiders jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but let the Golden Eagles back in to tie it 4-4. There would be five ties within the first 10 points until Mount took a 14-10 lead.
Brockport caught back up to Mount Union, tying the game 15-15, to have five more ties and two lead changes late in the game. With a 23-23 tie, two back to back kills by Synek and Chapman would give the Raiders a 25-23 win defeating Brockport in three sets.
Brockport was led by Emma Stoltz with nine kills and Noelle Poloncarz with 36 assists.
Mount Union finishes the Brockport State Invitational against Hilbert (N.Y.) and SUNY Canton tomorrow at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
