PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Mount Union's volleyball team lost to #17 Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) and defeated Arcadia (Pa.) Saturday, September 24 at the Double Tree Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Against Carnegie Mellon, the Purple Raiders (10-4) lost to the Tartans (14-2) in straight sets 25-19, 25-20, 25-14. Sophomore Kyleigh Jackson(Galloway/Westland) led the Raiders with 10 kills having a .643 hitting percentage. Junior Riley Schenk (Amherst/Amherst Steele) led in assists with 23.
The first set started off close with four ties and three lead changes in the first eight points of the set having the last tie at 8-8. The Tartans went on an 8-0 run to lead the Raiders 16-8. A kill by Brooke Knollman (Powell/Olentangy) got Mount Union started on a 9-5 run to come within four points of Carnegie Mellon, 20-16. The Raiders only scored three more points until the Tartans pulled out the set winning 25-19.
Mount Union and Carnegie Mellon went back and forth throughout the beginning of the second set with nine ties and five lead changes. With Mount Union up 12-11, Carnegie Mellon went on an 8-3 run to take back their lead with the Raiders calling a timeout at 19-15. A kill by Jackson put the Raiders down by four, 20-16. The Raider fought back with a 4-1 run making the score 23-20, the Tartans. Carnegie Mellon got the ball back to finish out the set 25-20.
In the third set, the Raiders kept up with the Tartans staying within one point in the beginning of the set with the score at 7-6. Carnegie Mellon went on 7-4 run to lead Mount Union by four points, 14-10. Carnegie Mellon kept a lead on Mount Union the rest of the way, going on a 10-1 run defeating the Raiders 25-14.
Carnegie Mellon was led by Jackie Gibbons with 13 kills with a .812 hitting percentage.
Against Arcadia, the Raiders defeated the Knights in straight sets, 25-11, 25-20, and 25-11.
Mount Union was led by senior Caitlyn Synek (Independence/Independence) with 10 kills and also had a .588 hitting percentage. Schenk led in assists with 22 while sophomore Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) led in digs with 17.
Mount Union started the first set off strong with Kelly Johnson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) going on a 4-0 service run having two service aces with Mount Union leading 8-4. Arcadia came back within one point, 8-7, until Mount Union went on a 14-3 run putting the Raiders up 20-10 with Schenk serving nine of those points. The Raiders would finish the first set winning 25-11.
In the second set, the Raiders had a three point lead on the Knights in the beginning of the set until Arcadia tied the game, 8-8. There would be two ties as Mount Union allowed Arcadia to go on a 7-3 run taking a three point lead, 15-11. The Raiders went on their own six point run taking an 18-14 lead over the Knights. Arcadia came back within two points of Mount Union, 20-18, but the Raiders finished the second set 25-20.
The Raiders kicked off the third set with a 9-4 run. Schenk then went on a 9-0 service run, with the Raiders having eight kills and Schenk serving one ace, leading the Knights 20-6. Mount Union allowed Arcadia only five more points until the Raiders ended the set 25-11.
Arcadia was led by Shannon Ryan with nine kills and Colleen Stengel with 19 assists.
Mount Union starts Ohio Athletic Conference play hosting Ohio Northern Saturday, October 1 at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio.
