Volleyball: Raiders Remain Victorious; Defeat Hanover and DePauw

Greencastle, Ind. – Mount Union's volleyball team defeated Hanover (Ind.) and DePauw (Ind.) in the first day of competition at the DePauw Tigers Invitational in Greencastle, Indiana.

Against Hanover, the Purple Raiders (11-0) went 28-26, 25-22, 25-23 in straight sets as Hanover suffered only their second loss of the season (8-2). Mount Union was led on the offense by freshman Madelin DiBease (Perry/Perry) and senior Mallory Sliman (Amherst/Amherst Steele) with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Senior setter Riley Schenk dished out another 33 assists for the second time this season. Protecting the court, with 14 digs was junior libero Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton), accompanied by 12 total Purple Raider blocks; five of those coming from junior Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland).

During the first set of the night, Mount Union came out strong with a quick 4-0 lead over Hanover with DiBease serving. The Raiders led the whole way through until the Panthers tied it up at 24 as they went on to score back and forth until Mount Union settled it at 28-26.

In set number two, Mount Union started with a 7-4 lead when Hanover had an early 4-0 run to put them on top. Another close set, as neither team by more than three points at a time as Mount Union went on to win 25-22.

In the third and final set, Hanover lead for the majority, but again never lead by more than three points. The Raiders continued to battle it out as they won 25-23 off a service ace by senior Celia Barrett (University Heights/Hathaway Brown). Barrett now has 26 service aces on the season.



Against host team DePauw (6-3), senior Brooke Knollman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) led the team with 15 kills. The Purple Raiders recorded 56 kills in the match, most of those coming off Schenk's 43 assists. Baird, successful again on defense, tallied a season high of 21 digs. With 12 team blocks for the second time tonight, Jackson led once again with four.

Mount Union got down quick 0-3 and were down 9-16 at one point before rallying and winning the first set 25-21. In set number two, the Purple Raiders went on to defeat the Tigers in a back and forth rally to keep close and win 25-23.

In the third set, DePauw came back hard and led the Raiders 12-21. Mount Union inched their way through the match and went on a 7-0 run but DePauw took the third set with a final score of 19-25.

Fourth and final set, the Raiders got out on top quick 4-0 with Marlee Peck (Homeworth/Marlington) serving. Mount Union led by as much as five and with several lead changes throughout, but ended up defeating DePauw 25-20.



Mount Union will continue play at the DePauw Tigers Invitational Saturday, September 16 against Wheaton (Ill.) at 11:00 am and Rose-Hulman (Ind.) at 3:00 pm.
