NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Mount Union women's volleyball team swept Muskingum in a competitive OAC matchup on Tuesday night at the Anne C. Steele Center. Going into the match, both teams were in the four-way tie at the top of the OAC and have received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25.
The Purple Raiders (21-3, 5-1) defeated the Fightining Muskies (17-4, 4-2) in straight sets going 25-23, 26-24 and 25-23, giving the Muskies their first three-set loss of the season. On offense for Mount Union, freshman Madelin DiBease (Perry/Perry) led the way with 12 kills coming from senior Riley Schenk's (Lorain/Amherst Steele) 26 assists.
Defensively, the Raiders recorded 61 team digs. Leading was junior libero Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) and Schenk with 14 each, followed by 10 from DiBease. Blocking for the Raiders was junior Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) with three solo blocks.
First set of the night, the Raiders and Muskies would not let each other get ahead by more than three points until Mount Union took off on a set of runs. With the largest lead of five at 15-10, the Raiders were able to continue to lay on the pressure. Aftering tying it up with scores of 21 through 23, Mount Union was able to score the final point and win 25-23.
Set number two, the Raiders and Muskies stayed knotted up through 12 points. A quick, yet contained, Muskingum run allowed the Muskies to look to close out the set at 22-24. However, Mount Union was able to push a four-point swing to take the set at 26-24.
The Muskies got out on top quick to start the third set. After tying things up at 13, points a piece, the Raiders were able to apply their best hitting percentage of the match and carry on to win with a final score of 25-23.
With just four matches remaining in the regular season, Mount Union will next face the Wilmington Fightin' Quakers at home on Saturday, October 21 at 1:00 pm.
